Ntuppatedde

Fotografare le Ntuppatedde durante la festa di Sant'Agata a Catania è per me un'esperienza incredibilmente affascinante. Il termine 'Ntuppatedde' deriva dal siciliano "tuppa", che indica la membrana che protegge il corpo delle lumache e suggerisce qualcosa di nascosto. Con questa interpretazione è nata la tradizione delle Ntuppatedde a Catania, in riferimento alle donne che si travestivano e coprivano il viso per non rivelare la propria identità durante i giorni della festa di Sant'Agata. Mi colpisce profondamente il modo in cui queste donne, dietro il velo del loro travestimento, riescono a trasmettere un senso di mistero e di storia.

Photographing the Ntuppatedde during the feast of Saint Agatha in Catania is an incredibly fascinating experience for me. The term 'Ntuppatedde' derives from the Sicilian "tuppa," which refers to the membrane that protects the body of snails, suggesting something hidden. With this interpretation, the tradition of the Ntuppatedde in Catania was born, referring to women who disguised themselves and covered their faces to conceal their identity during the days of the feast of Saint Agatha. I am deeply struck by how these women, behind the veil of their disguise, manage to convey a sense of mystery and ancient history. Capturing their gestures and veiled gazes allows me to capture not only the visual beauty of this centuries-old tradition but also the powerful symbolism of freedom and cultural identity they represent. It is an honor to document this ritual which, while rooted in the past, continues to hold a vibrant and meaningful significance for the community of Catania today.
